CRASC Takes Stand on School Funding
Submitted by Connor Gilbert on April 2, 2009 - 7:50am
At the Executive Board Meeting last night, April 1, at Arlington Echo, the CRASC Executive Board voted unanimously to strongly oppose County Executive Leopold's request for a waiver to the state's Maintenance of Effort requirement.
The requirement ensures that even in times of economic downturn, localities fund their school systems adequately. County Executive Leopold has now requested a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education to cut school funding by $7 million over last year's budget, leaving the county $9 million short of its funding requirement.
The Anne Arundel County Board of Education took a similar stance by a vote of 8-1 at its Wednesday meeting. AACPS Press Release
